McCoy Tyner Legends is an opportunity to hear some of the world’s finest jazz musicians interpret and perform Tyner’s iconic original music. McCoy Tyner Legends is directed by long-time collaborator Avery Sharpe and created by McCoy’s son Nurudeen.

McCoy Tyner, who passed away in March 2020 at the age of 81, is indisputably part of the pantheon of piano geniuses who brought jazz into the modern age at the turn of the 1960s. Initially lauded for his participation in John Coltrane’s legendary quartet, this flamboyant stylist forged his own personal success over the years by exploring all forms of the African-American tradition in a mix of hard bop and modal jazz. No one would have been better suited to capture this diversity than bassist Avery Sharpe, who accompanied him in countless bands for over twenty years. As the leader of an international and cross-generational all-star band, he draws on the pianist’s vast catalog of compositions to reveal the extraordinary inventiveness of a lyrical, energetic and colorful music. The trend-setting pianist graced the P&B with José James and Chris Potter in 2011 with the program “The Music of John Coltrane/Johnny Hartman”.
